Beautiful Handmade Raku Vase
Made by Local Potter.. My Husband!
What is Raku?
Raku pottery is a Japanese ceramic style that's traditionally used for tea ceremonies. Raku pottery is known for its low-fired, iridescent glaze and its distinctive crazed appearance.
How is raku pottery made?
Shape: Traditionally hand-shaped, my Husband throws on a potter's wheel
Fire: Fired at a relatively low temperature, then removed from the kiln while still hot
Cool: Cooled in the open air, which can cause the clay to crack
Glaze: Traditionally used a lead glaze
Why is raku pottery crazed?
The rapid heating and cooling of raku pottery causes tiny cracks to appear in the clay and glaze.
