In the 13th century, the Venetian government ordered all glassmakers to relocate to Murano, an island in the Venetian lagoon, to reduce fire risks in Venice and protect the valuable trade secrets of glass production. For 800 years, the name Murano has been synonymous with the highest quality, hand-blown colored glass.
This pair of orange bell peppers was made by S. Puccini, a very well respected glassmaker in Murano. Only one still has its original label but it is easy to see they were both made by the same company. The glass sculptures measure approximately 5 inches tall and 2.5 to 3 inches wide. Both are in excellent condition except for the smaller one having a little chip on the tip of the green stem (see photo).
